don’t go here lol

went here for 3 years and couldn’t bring myself to go to school most days because teachers were horrible, treated students like dirt. there were some good ones but most of them should not be working with kids. white teachers saying the n word multiple times infront of the whole class with students of colour, some teachers had a weird creepy obsession with a lot of the popular kids, overall don’t go here if you want to feel safe at school

Eltham High - Is it worth it?

I have found that EHS, although a fun and rather care-free school, only suits one type of learner. Somebody independent and only slightly above average. Here, you are encouraged to learn on your own - or at least it is framed that way. Like many schools across Victoria, the teachers are overworked, underpaid, and under-supported - and it suited me! I was able to practice independence in terms of study and work, which has greatly benefitted me at university.

However, the quality of teaching at EHS is inconsistent at best. There are some INCREDIBLE teachers (especially among the English and Humanities sectors) but the culture is set by the principal. He is clearly better suited to politics than teaching, and the lack of student support for him is made clear in the school. This also leads to having a few utterly terrible teachers who can greatly impact student learning and outcomes.

If you want your child to learn independence and are happy to roll the dice with the quality of teaching - EHS is for you! If your child is struggling and needs consistent support, I’d avoid EHS like the plague.

If you’re child is a high achiever and able to push for harder work, they will thrive here if independent but otherwise - not the right fit.

Eltham High claims to be a school that is anti-homophobia, sexism, racism, and xenophobia….but the culture still runs deep. Ranging from health teachers refusing to teach safe same-sex behaviours or teachers ignoring kids using slurs - EHS is just as bad as any other school in the area.

With all that being said - I had an alright time barring any experiences with the principle.
