This school is a joke. When I graduate next year, my yearbook quote will be, “This was hell.” I can only hope that potential students and families reading my review will go to another school to save themselves from what I have had to endure as a student.
Let’s begin with the joke of the teachers. The fundamental role of a teacher is to TEACH. It’s in the name of the role. Yet I find it so amusing that half of the Waverley teachers cannot seem to do so, instead relying excessively on recycled PowerPoints that they read off. Furthermore, they are unprofessional and quite embarrassing. In particular, my previous English teacher and her boyfriend, also in the English faculty, are always in each others classrooms “stopping by” and spending their students’ class time to talk to each other and bring each other coffee in each others’ classrooms. It is so unnecessary and uncalled for when many students just want to learn.
The teachers they also hire are the most horrible people. In particular, a past Outdoor Ed and PE teacher turned out to be a pedophile that the school was completely “unaware of” which I am sure if they had conducted the relevant background checks would have found out immediately, as many students, like myself, did not feel comfortable around him from the beginning. Furthermore, an old accounting teacher who has returned as a Biblical studies teacher has to be the most misogynist person I have ever met, stating blatantly in class that “women should not be allowed to be leaders of the church”. During lockdown as a year 9 in 2021, I got told repeatedly to take a walk when I was struggling with my depression showing just how much the teachers care about their students.
The school also only cares about their ranking - they have forced students not as academically capable to do VCAL even when it’s not the right path for them just so that they won’t pull down school rankings. Students are only commodities they use to gain more students and earn more money.
I could go on for so much longer, including about the vaping and behaviour of the students themselves, but I am sure that other students can do it for me as this negative experience at Waverley is universal.
Don’t send your kids here if you want them to learn anything. The few good maths teachers at this school teach the highest scoring students without any support for the struggling students. One of the maths teacher has such a strong accent that half of the class cannot even understand it. The English teachers don’t teach the subject, just give you the text and worksheets. Some teachers are super strict on talking and don’t even allow group discussion. The science teachers don't take well to being proven wrong and will take ages to follow up on emails. Some teachers are actually unqualified in the field that they teach, with an outdoor education teacher having a maths degree and a maths teacher having an engineering degree. The school frequently branches off from curriculum to provide a "biblical view" on topics.
The teachers think that they're superior as human beings and constantly demand respect, even through raising their voice. There are several teachers who are so old that they can’t even use a computer.
If you think that the school can be saved by their biblical view, think again. 90% of the students swear and most of the time, the teachers couldn’t care less. I’d say that only around 40% of the cohort are Christian with a good 50% of the Christians being anti vax nutcases. The bible lessons are minimal and just consist of watching a video. (But don’t worry the school libraries don’t have Harry Potter because Jesus wouldn’t want that for us)
The learning ethic of the school is dismal. It’s common for the maths exams to come back with the class average around 60% in the intermediate and low advanced classes. It’s also common for people to just decide not to do the homework and just take the 0 as they couldn’t care less about the grade.
The school computers all have software monitoring every google search, even at home. They install so much spyware that the normally speedy laptops take a solid minute to boot up. The restrictions are so over restrictive that some of the learning software that is needed for classes are blocked by the IT department. The schools has hunt people down for having things in their bio or Instagram pictures taken out of school with no reference to the school. The school even hunts people down for their private conversations being deemed "disrespectful" or "unchristian"
Even though the school fees are ridiculously high, there is little spending. Within the entire school, there are two toilets that are available to students. One is far from any of the classrooms, and the other being crowded being shared by both primary and secondary students. The majority of the classrooms are old, probably from before the turn of the century, with only one half of one wing being modern. There is a new 3 storey building, however this is only for the primary students who already have a 2 storey wing. Without spending on buildings, you would surely expect the extracurricular activities offered to be plentiful, right? No. The school doesn't have a debate team or participate in the model United Nations. Less than 10 people participate in the science Olympiad yearly and the school puts so little thought into it that students can do it from home without any supervision whatsoever. The band and music programs don't ever have any activities, with the last time that the band went on a trip in 2016.
